Doing our bit

You’ve probably heard lots about plastic straws recently. They’re some of the worst polluters of beaches and oceans. Here’s everything you need to know about the switch to biodegradable alternatives...

Since the beginning of the year, we’ve been on a mission to use less plastic across our business, starting with plastic straws in our pubs.

In 2017, we used around 17 million straws in total, with each one lasting up to 600 years in the environment. This year, we’ve only been handing out straws when our customers ask for them, which has helped us achieve a 63% reduction so far. It’s a great start, but there’s more we can do…

Behind the scenes, we’ve also been researching biodegradable alternatives that don’t harm the environment, meet our customers’ needs and are cost-effective for our business – and we’ve found our solution!

The new option is a biodegradable straw made from Chitosan. This is a new, naturally occurring material made from discarded seashells. It looks and functions just like our old plastic straws, but – importantly – will completely decompose in just a few months.

Energy Manager Chris said: “We’ve spent longer than most tackling this problem because the solutions we found just weren’t good enough. We’re committed to putting long-term, sustainable solutions in place and this new straw ticks all the boxes.”

Similarly to now, the new straws will be kept at the back of the bar and will only be given to customers who ask for them.

If you work at one of our pubs or bars, your manager will brief you on the new straws shortly.
