Braving the big freeze!

The ‘beast from the east’ didn’t stop us from going the extra mile for teammates, customers and the local community…

Let’s face it, last week’s wintry weather was pretty rubbish! The ‘beast from the east’ and ‘storm Emma’ hit us all like a ton of bricks. But – in true Marston’s spirit – we didn’t let a bit of snow (okay, a lot of snow!) and some high-speed winds drag us down! Here are some of our pub teams’ heroic efforts…

The Old Ash Dene, Northumberland.

The team at our Generous George pub ran a snowman building comp in the beer garden to bring the community together. Prizes included pizza and hot drinks – the perfect treat after hours in the snow! Local friends and families braved the freezing conditions to join the fun.

The Newton Grange, Durham

Teammates put out a plea on Facebook for anyone with snow-friendly transport to help them deliver their hand-made pizzas to the flat-out emergency service teams. The post got over 180 shares and, with the help of customer Kimbely Groves, pizzas were successfully delivered to A&E, Treetops, ITU and police officers based at Durham hospital. The team’s efforts were hugely appreciated!

The Queen of the Loch, Balloch

“My wife and I got caught out in the winter storm; we made it into Balloch and stopped at the Queen of the Loch and were made extremely welcome. The manager’s only interest was that the guests and the team were looked after. All in all it was a very pleasant way to spend two days in a storm. This was the first time we have used a Marston’s hotel but it won’t be the last.” Customer feedback

The Chain Runner, Livingston

“The manager went out of his way to help my stranded step-daughter last night – getting her the last hotel room and keeping the kitchen open so she could get something to eat after her being literally abandoned by Scotrail on her way to catch a flight. He even allowed for me to call up later to pay for the room. Fantastic and a weight off our minds that she was safe.” Customer feedback

A huge thanks to everyone for doing your best to keep things going in really tough conditions. It was some of the worst weather the UK has seen for years, but you managed to turn a negative into a positive and proved that our pubs really are at the heart of the community. Well done guys, we’ve successfully seen off the ‘beast from the east’!  🙂
