Zero waste to landfill

We’re saying a HUGE thank you for helping us achieve our zero waste to landfill goal in just 18 months!

We’ve hit our target of 99.5%, which is classed as ‘zero waste’ because the 0.5% represents material that can’t be disposed of by any other means.

Since 2016, we’ve been working in partnership with UK Waste Solutions Ltd and our recycling rate has increased from 60% to 77%. We’re excited to be leading the way in our sector and so far we have:

  • Reduced the number of bins at each site – in some cases from eight to one
  • Sent tons of cooking oil for refining to produce biodiesel
  • Invested in cardboard bailers so we can compact packaging and easily send it off for recycling
  • Reduced plastic straw use by 81%
  • Redesigned our first beer garden at The Sun in Romsley with recycled plastic products (click here to find out more)
  • Put the latest energy-efficient tech (including special LED lighting) into every new build pub opened in the last five years
  • Taken steps to supply our own water – we’re the third company in the UK to secure this self-supply license!

On top of all that, our very own Energy Manager Chris White has been named in the exclusive EDIE’s Top 100 Energy Leaders, a group that celebrates the best in-house energy managers. The group hosts conferences and talks, and shares insights and developments to set standards for energy efficiency across UK businesses.

Our success has even got external coverage in the Express & Star – click here to read the full article.

Keep up the great work you’ve all been doing; and remember, we can all continue to make a difference if we keep sweating the small stuff!
