Beer garden innovation

Take a peek at the new beer garden at The Sun – it’s been redesigned using specially recycled materials!

The Sun in Romsley has a great outdoor garden area that’s perfect for summer drinks and al fresco dining, but it was due a makeover.

The result is a first-of-its-kind for Marston’s – a redesigned space made from mixed plastic waste that would otherwise be sent to landfill or incineration. With support from recycling firm Plastecowood, we’ve turned our plastic waste into plastic lumber for the garden’s walkways, fences and new raised patio area.

Jon, Waste and Recycling Co-ordinator, said: “Plastic waste from 35 of our pubs in Yorkshire and the North East makes its way into Plastecowood products. By purchasing products made from 100% recycled plastics, we’re helping to prevent more plastic waste ending up in landfill.”

On top of the environmental benefits, the new material is also incredibly robust, which means it’s more cost-efficient for our pubs and looks great for our customers.

Sarah, Senior Surveyor, said: “The plastic lumber needs very little maintenance and has a long life, making it perfect for beer gardens. And, Plastecowood collects the lumber at the end of its useful life and uses it again to make the same product. We’re really pleased to be supporting a UK business and trialling such an innovative product at one of our busiest pubs.”
