Matt’s climbing his mountain!

General Manager Matt has won £250 to conquer a very special challenge – learning how to sign – after entering Wainwright’s comp.

Fell walker Alfred Wainwright’s pioneering spirit is the inspiration behind our golden beer and the customer campaign is all about finding and conquering a mountain. So, in true Wainwright style, the comp asked teammates to get in touch with a goal they’ve always wanted to achieve and why.

Matt, General Manager at The Spread Eagle in Corby, has always wanted to learn British Sign Language (BSL) and his passion for communication really stood out! Now, he’ll take part in a special signing course, courtesy of Wainwright.

Matt had a few lessons at his secondary school (where there were some children with hearing impairments) and his mum was also a keen BSL user, but he’s lost touch with it over the years.

He said: “I’ve always had a love for language and talking to new people – it’s a must when you work in the pub industry. I think it would be really great if we could have a conversation with all our customers, including BSL users. Doing the course will not only give me a new skill, but it will also improve the service I provide in my pub.”

Matt starts the course in September and it runs for 32 weeks. Congrats Matt – we can’t wait for you to teach us some BSL after your lessons!
