Lifting the latch!

Jennings Brewery has snapped up a bronze award for strong-brew Sneck Lifter at the Champion Winter Beer of Britain 2018.

Sneck Lifter won the North West Regional heats last year in the Old Ales Strong Mild category before reaching the final, which took place at the Great British Winter Beer Festival in Feb.

The Winter Beer of Britain competition gives brewers the chance to showcase the best traditional winter brews in the country.

Sneck Lifter is one of the flagship beers at Jennings. In Northern dialect, ‘sneck’ means ‘door latch’ and a sneck lifter was traditionally a man’s last sixpence, which enabled him to lift the latch of a pub door and buy himself a pint!

Jeremy Pettman, Head Brewer at Jennings, said: “We are absolutely delighted that Sneck Lifter has won this award! The ale was originally brought out as a seasonal winter warmer in 1990 and it proved to be so popular that it became a permanent ale in our portfolio. Jennings Brewery is celebrating its 190th year of brewing this year and this award goes to highlight that we are a long-established brewery, producing quality cask ales.”
