The Waggon Inn is Pub of the Year!

Beating off tough competition from over 400 entries, The Waggon Inn, Rochdale, is winner at the Marston’s Pub of the Year Grand Final.

Winning the National Award in the Turnaround category, The Wagon then went on to scoop the top prize, impressing Operations Director Andy Carlill with their community focused offering.

He said: “The Waggon has a unique selling point in that it offers restaurant quality food in a traditional community pub environment. There can’t be many pubs where builders will come in for their lunch and order tapas! Dario and Kate’s ethos is all about customers leaving happier than when they arrive – and they certainly do a great job of putting a smile on people’s faces!”

Dario and Kate have been at the Waggon Inn since November 2015 and have turned what was a tired back street boozer, into a vibrant community pub, offering something special for locals and visitors alike. And, the customer reviews really prove it! Kate said: “We were absolutely gob-smacked. We never in a million years thought we would win. We’re really pleased to see all our hard work recognised.”

Every year, pubs from our Taverns and Leased estate put themselves forward for one of seven competition categories, ultimately hoping to scoop the top spot – Pub of the Year. They are visited by a team of judges who rate the pub experience. The two top scorers in each category by region (North, South and Central) are then invited to a regional final, where the regional winners for each category are announced. The regional winners are then judged to decide the National Winner for each category and the Pub of the Year.

Licensees from the seven National Winning pubs were invited to the final, held at The Farmhouse, Mackworth. The event was supported by Molson Coors, Pernod-Ricard and Weston’s Cider. ” It’s really good to see such a fantastic group of operators being recognised for what they do best and it’s a perfect opportunity to celebrate the great British pub,” added Andy.
