Top 100 in Britain’s Most Admired Companies list

We’re celebrating because we ranked 98 out of 234 companies and placed third in the Restaurant and Pubs sector – as scored by our industry peers.

Every year, Management Today publishes academic research that gives an insight into the reputations of the country’s top businesses and shows how companies view their fiercest rivals.

The research, compiled by Leeds Business School, scores each company across 12 measures of success, including quality of management, financial soundness and leadership. There is a full list, ranking 234 of the country’s top companies, as well as a top 10 list for each individual sector. Through the research, Leeds Business School have demonstrated a clear link between reputation and share price value.

In the Restaurant and Pub sector we ranked first for quality of products and services, community and environmental responsibility, and corporate governance. This is a huge achievement and it shows that we are really making Marston’s ‘The Place to Be’. We’ve come a long way since 2016, where we ranked 214 out of 241 companies, with a score of 62.5, and we didn’t feature in the top five in our sector.

This year, it was tight at the top of the leader board with only 1.8 points between the leader, JD Weatherspoon, and Marston’s. In overall third position, and with 79.0 points, we are ranked higher than some of our top performing competitors, including, Greene King, Mitchells and Butlers and SSP Group.

Management Today commented that the recent Charles Wells takeover and strong sales in drinks-led pubs helped us to secure this position. In a competitive market, the value of a good name is more important than ever and, it is really great to be gaining this recognition.
